Marcus insisted on arguing the point. “You won’t be here much in the next few months. Put your gear in storage and find a new place when this is finished.”

There was a flash of defiance from her. “I can’t just up and leave. I still have three months left on my lease—”

“Not a problem, I’ll pay it out for you.”

“I can’t let you do that.”

“Why don’t you just think of it as—”

“I know, I know, part of the deal.”

He sat next to her on the floor of the lounge area, wearing heavy gloves so they could easily pick up the broken glass and other shattered bits and pieces. Knocking back his offer of getting someone in to deal with the mess, she had insisted on doing as much as possible herself.

He knew she thought it necessary for closure, to help her sort through everything, but he wasn’t happy about it. There was still anger towards him simmering below the surface, but in the end she had reluctantly agreed to his proposition.

Once the news story had gone to air, Laura had been flooded with calls of sympathy from friends, and people she barely knew. He told her it would be easier to leave the answering machine to take the calls. She relented. He took it upon himself to deal with the messages and she didn’t argue with him.

Of course, the newspaper wanted a story as well, so the following day another headlining feature made it to the front page. A steady stream of visitors arrived. Marcus wondered if they were genuine in their concern or just keen to have a gawk at the apartment.

In a few days, the apartment was cleared out and cleaned up. The carpet would have to be replaced. There was just no way anyone would be able to get all the splinters of glass out of the pile. Laura couldn’t bring herself to sleep in the apartment any longer, and joined Marcus back at the hotel every night. They had adjoining rooms. She was grateful for his help and support, and her anger over the television interview diminished.

She left her apartment on the last day without a twinge of regret. Not at all sorry to be leaving.
